VAWA, or the Violence Against Women Act, is a U.S. law that allows certain noncitizens who have suffered abuse by a U.S. citizen or green card holder family member to apply for a green card without their abuser’s knowledge or involvement.
Eligible applicants may include abused spouses and children of U.S. citizens or green card holders, and parents abused by a U.S. citizen child.
If approved, you may be able to live and work in the U.S. permanently, apply for a green card, and eventually apply for U.S. citizenship.
